Hotan is famous for its jade, carpets, silk and embroidery. For almost 2,000 years it was the principal supplier of precious nephrite, much cherished by the Chinese. White jade came from the bed of the White Jade River; dark-green jade came from the Black Jade River, and was transported by caravans to the heartland of China where it was then exquisitely carved. Today Hotan is a collection centre for the raw white jade, but the yield is very limited. Hotan got the sericulture more than 1,000 years ago, and it is the centre of the traditional hand-woven aidelaixi silk that is produced by small family units and is a favorite of Uigur women.

Harbin is the capital of Heilongjiang province, it is located in the middle reaches of the Songhua River in the south of the province, which borders Russia in the north. The urban area is composed of seven districts: Daoli, Daowai, Nangang, Taiping, Xiangfang, Dongli and Pingfang. The whole city covers 1,637 square kilometres, with a population of 2.54 million.

Shenyang is the capital of Liaoning Province, about 500 miles north of Beijing. The city used to be known as Mukden, a name used by the Tartar people who once ruled the area. It has a history of more than 3,000 years. When the Manchurians seized Beijing in 1644 and established the Qing dynasty with Beijing as its capital, Mukden became its secondary capital and remained so far 350 years. Now it covers an area of 13,007 square kilometers and with a population of 6.73 million. Dalian is located on the southernmost tip of China's Liaodong Peninsular, jutting out into the Bohai Sea in the northeast, between China and North Korea.
